Recording Interface?
I have been looking for a decent computer interface to get my mixer into my computer. I have a laptop computer (Dell E1505) and a nice 6 channel mixer with phantom power and all kinds of live stage mics. I've heard many of these units have little gain on the internal preamps but with the mixer, I should have not problem with that. The laptop does not have a firewire port so i will need to get a decent USB recording interface. I have Cubase SX3 I have loaded on the Dell but I know a all of these units will come with their own software. Anyone have any suggestions?

Re: Recording Interface?
I'd say the first consideration would be how many separate tracks you plan on recording at one time. For me, it was also budget. When I bought my ECHO Layla 3G, the better interfaces were selling for over $1,000. For us solo artists, 2 channels is usually enough. Most interfaces will have front panel features like universal inputs, trim controls, signal/peak indicators and a headphone out with a volume control. The rear panel connections will vary. Just make sure you have the ones you need for the equipment you want to connect or may connect in the future. Most of todays interfaces are 16 and 24 bit capable. Other considerations would be compatibility with your operating system, your recording software and if the model your looking at is going to be replaced in the near future with a newer one. Seems like they drop the price right before a new model comes out right after I buy something. haha I like to read user reviews. They can let you know of any problems with installation, driver issues and customer support or lack of. I also like to visit the manufactures web site.

I'm a BIG FAN of the Echo Layla products. I run the Layla 3G thru one PC & the Layla 24/96 thru another. Never had any problems with install or compatibilty with Cakewalk Sonar 4. Their (echo) little control panel software isn't pretty, but easy to use. The problem for you with Echo Layla lies in the PC interface. Both my breakout boxes interface thru a PCi card (8 channels mono or stereo) with the option of midi, SPDIF, & optical, but no USB. I have a Mackie 16 channel Onyx 1640 that has a USB- PC interface which I tried for awhile. Wasn't happy with the result so I bought the Layla 3G. I have recorded 6 channels (stereo) simultaneously with the 3G, but usually record only one in stereo. Tracks? Well I've recorded up to 32 on a single tune with Sonar 4, but usually am below 24. Do laptops have extra slots for PCi cards? Layla might have a product with a USB interface. Musicians Friend certainly advertises alot of USB interface recorders.
